Yarn Stashing

the great yarn split

I got mail! Actually, we got mail.

Janet contacted me a few weeks ago with a 'yarn share' thought. We both want to make two Dale of Norway sweaters, the Lillelam and Bondegard, each of which require partial skeins of several different colors. Baby Ull is reasonably priced, but not the cheapest stuff, so I jumped at the idea! We ordered most of the colors from WEBS and got 25% off our order. For now, we ordered yarn for Lillelam; it has fewer colors and seems to be a bit easier. After all was said and done, each sweater is costing around 40 dollars. GREAT DEAL!

Since I received the yarn last week, I wound the skeins we're splitting into two balls. I think I did an ok job splitting them, but my cheapo scale has an accuracy of give or take 5g.

All done!

The Baby Ull will be making its way across the country to Janet this week. Sorry, I cannot say it comes from a pet-free home, but Abby has known since day one in this house that she is not, under any circumstances, to pull yarn down from my shelves or the table. She wants to though. I can see it in her eyes.

why I love football

superbowl_sale_yarn.jpg

Now normally, I'm pretty passive about football. If it's on, I will sit there and knit contently, and if there's a "great game" on per my boyfriend's standards, I'm ok if I miss it. I could take it or leave it. But. On superbowl Sunday, I am thankful for football, and I even love football. Why, you ask? Well, my most favorite LYS, New York Knits, has taken it upon themselves to improve this day of sports by adding in some yarn incentive. Every year on the special football day, most of the store is deeply discounted. They open up extra check out lines. There are women everywhere buying yarn (and a man standing next to a knitter holding her new stash). I went with my college friend Lizzy who bought some super soft Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk in lavander and green to make a hat and scarf set. She just joined for working in the round (her first hat) and has a few very perfect hat brim rows.

I made more of what you might call stash additions. My enjoy making all sorts of baby knits, and my favorite yarn for this is the Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino. I got enough for a sweater in the blue/lavander color, and a few skeins of light green and pink for accent, hats, or booties, whatever strikes me.

I also impulse purchased some Lobster Pot yarn that was a good deal. It's hand dyed in lobster pots in Cape Cod, how spiffy is that? These may become a hat and mitten set, not too sure on this one. The yarn is soft, but sturdy enough for something good.

I've also been coveting the Rowan Plaid collection booklet, and since it was on sale even cheaper than Amazon, I picked it up. There are quite a few nice sweaters in here!

Abby just watches me and I'm sure if she could understand, she would shake her head. She was too excited for photography this morning, visitors and all.

Yarn stashing

My friend Andra and I went to one of our LYS a few days ago.. not the really nice one which is a 30 minute drive away, but the close one with the 30% off coupon which carries just about every single novelty yarn you could imagine. Double what you're imagining, it's a lot. We scoured the store to come up with acceptable knitting yarns, and Andra came up with these to make her sister a scarf. I brought them back to my house under the guise that I'd be winding them into balls for her. I really just wanted to pet them some more. They're really more purple than they look in the picture.

I found these beautiful wool/mohair blends in a pretty color named 'blueberry ice'. I was torn between this color, a deep pink, and a deep reddish orangey pink color. Andra reminded me I have a lot of pink things (like the scarf I was wearing at the time) and I needed to branch out. These will become a scarf and hat set I'm thinking. I like the Esther Williams Hat pattern, but need to figure out a way to match up the patterning for the scarf.
